Two iconic libraries that embody Chennai’s vintage charm, the Madras Literary Society in Nungambakkam and the Goschen Hall Library in Chintadripet, are set to undergo significant restoration. The ₹6.19-crore project for the Madras Literary Society will address structural damages, including leaks and cracks, while preserving its 19th-century architecture and extensive collection of rare books.
Similarly, the ₹2.36-crore project for Goschen Hall aims to revive the historic 1926 structure, known for its classical design, by repairing its heavily damaged roof and walls. These projects, spearheaded by the PWD’s Building Centre and Conservation Division, are expected to conclude in a year, rejuvenating these cultural landmarks.
