A positive development has occurred as nearly 2,850 contract workers of Chennai Metrowater will be granted a Deepavali bonus of ₹3,000 this year. This announcement follows the withdrawal of the strike notice by workers, as an agreement was reached between the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Contract Workers Union and the water agency.
G. Beem Rao, the union president affiliated with CITU, stated that this marks the first instance of contract workers receiving a bonus since the inception of Metrowater. Initially, the union had declared a strike, advocating for permanent positions and bonuses for field workers. The resolution was achieved in the presence of the Labour Welfare department’s assistant commissioner, K.P. Santhi.
