Rescue Efforts Continue for Oil-Affected Pelicans in Ennore

Rescue efforts are underway in Ennore as two more spot-billed pelicans, impacted by the recent oil spill, were successfully rescued and transported to Guindy National Park for treatment. Over 50 pelicans and various other birds have reportedly succumbed to the effects of the oil spill. The collaborative team, consisting of Wildlife Trust of India, Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary, Forest Department, and local volunteers, is actively involved in the ongoing rescue operations.

While the number of heavily impacted birds has decreased from around 70 to 20 based on a recent survey, the team remains vigilant in searching for birds that may have flown to other areas, such as Pallikaranai and Cooum. Additionally, a positive sign was observed with the return of over 2,000 birds, including egrets, seagulls, terns, storks, and cormorants, to the Ennore creek, indicating a gradual recovery from the oil spill’s impact.
