Release of Ghaggar River braces for flood in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district

Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district is on high alert as it prepares for potential floods due to the release of a significant volume of rainwater into the Ghaggar River from Haryana’s Ottu barrage in Sirsa district. Heavy rains in Punjab and Haryana have already caused the water level of the Ghaggar River to rise steadily.

Official data indicates that water discharge from the Ottu barrage has reached 38,400 cusecs, and authorities in Haryana are concerned that it may further increase to 40,000 cusecs in the coming hours.

In response to the situation, the Hanumangarh district administration is taking measures to delay the onset of floods and has commenced the evacuation of villages in vulnerable areas.

The authorities have successfully postponed the flood situation for three days by diverting Haryana’s rainwater into the Indira Gandhi Canal and repairing the breaches in the river. However, both the Ghaggar River and Indira Gandhi Canal have now reached their full capacity, heightening the risk of flooding.
