Record June Rainfall Deluges Chennai in Two Decades
Chennai has witnessed its highest June rainfall in the past twenty years, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recording significantly above-average precipitation. Nungambakkam received 22.5 cm of rain, surpassing its monthly average of 6 cm, marking a record since 2003.
Similarly, Meenambakkam logged 27.4 cm against a usual 7 cm, reminiscent of the heavy rains seen in June 1996 when the station received 41 cm due to a cyclonic storm. The India Meteorological Department predicts continued sporadic thunderstorms in Chennai until Friday, indicating a possibly historic June for rainfall in the region.
