Precautionary Measures Urged for Elderly Amid Rising Heat
As heat-related illnesses become more prevalent, especially among vulnerable populations, doctors at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital emphasize the need for increased precautionary measures, particularly for the elderly. Recently, a 70-year-old woman from Ambur collapsed at home after waiting for an extended period at a ration shop under the scorching sun.
Admitted to RGGGH, she was diagnosed with heat stroke and required ventilatory support. Elderly individuals with cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and those on medications for hypertension or diabetes are at a higher risk for heat-related illnesses, and it’s crucial for them to take preventive measures. Common precautions advised for vulnerable groups also apply to the elderly, who should avoid going out during hot daytime, strenuous physical activities, and ensure proper hydration to prevent dehydration and related complications.
