Political leaders in Tamil Nadu, including Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai and PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss, have vehemently opposed Kerala’s proposal to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar. They argue that the existing 128-year-old structure has been deemed strong by multiple audits, including a Supreme Court-appointed expert committee.
Ramadoss urged the central government to reject Kerala’s application for an environmental impact assessment, criticizing Kerala’s attempt to hinder Tamil Nadu from raising the reservoir’s water level. Additionally, AMMK general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran called on Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister to block Kerala’s efforts, underscoring the regional tension and political stakes surrounding the dam’s future.
