Political Furor Erupts in Kerala Over Kejriwal’s Arres
The arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate has sparked widespread protests in Kerala, with both the ruling front and the Opposition condemning it as an assault on Indian democracy and federalism. CPI(M) activists led by State Secretary M.V. Govindan staged demonstrations across the state, burning effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They likened Kejriwal’s arrest to a regression into the authoritarian days of the Emergency and vowed to resist any encroachment on democracy.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor led a march in Thiruvananthapuram, denouncing the BJP’s alleged use of Constitutional agencies to tilt the electoral landscape in its favor. KPCC president K. Sudhakaran accused the BJP of targeting political rivals and stifling dissent through agencies like the ED, CBI, and I-T department.
However, BJP State President K. Surendran defended the arrest, alleging corruption charges against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and accusing the Congress of aiding Vijayan in evading accountability. He emphasized the BJP’s role as the genuine opposition in Kerala, predicting an end to the Congress-CPI(M) dominance in the state’s politics.
