Pakistan’s General Elections to Proceed as Planned in January 2024

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asserted that the critical general elections in the country will proceed as scheduled in the last week of January 2024, dispelling any possibility of a delay. In a recent statement, the ECP confirmed that all necessary preparations for the elections have been completed. Following the publication of the constituency delimitation, the election schedule will be announced in due course.

The ECP highlighted that the initial phase of delimitation has been successfully completed, with the second phase, involving objections, set to conclude shortly. The commission will commence hearings on these objections on October 30 and 31, ultimately publishing a final list of constituencies on November 30. The general election schedule will be disclosed following this final publication, with the ECP emphasizing the clarity of its decisions.

The upcoming elections are set to occur within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly, which was prematurely dissolved on August 10, necessitating elections no later than November. However, the approval of the 2023 digital census results on August 5 by the Council of Common Interests has postponed the polls until February 2024 at the latest.
