The Pakistani Foreign Ministry has officially submitted a request to join the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) bloc, stating that it is an important group of developing countries. The decision aligns with Pakistan’s recognition of the BRICS group’s proclaimed openness to inclusive multilateralism. Joining BRICS would allow Pakistan to contribute to international cooperation and inclusive multilateralism.
The spokesperson emphasized Pakistan’s friendly ties with most BRICS members and expressed hope for the group to move forward on Pakistan’s request. During the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa, Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were also invited to join the bloc, with their memberships effective from January 1, 2024.
