Ongoing Strength Testing for Elevated Expressway Pillars

The strength of 115 pillars for the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated expressway is currently being tested to ensure they meet the new design specifications. These pillars, originally part of the structure, will be retrofitted after undergoing ultrasonic and destructive tests on core and steel rod samples. Construction work over the Cooum River has been temporarily halted due to the Northeast monsoon, requiring the removal of temporary structures to allow proper drainage.

Meanwhile, other construction activities continue, including the development of the main carriageway and ramps at Chennai Port, as well as piling work in Maduravoyal. The ₹3,570-crore project, part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, aims to connect key areas such as Chennai Port, the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway, and industrial hubs. The expressway will include 13 ramps and will relieve city traffic by providing a dedicated route for urban commuters.
