Nigeria’s Supreme Court Upholds President Bola Tinubu’s Election Victory
Nigeria’s Supreme Court has put an end to months of legal disputes by upholding the decision of an election tribunal that affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February polls. In a unanimous decision by a seven-member panel of justices, the apex court ruled in favor of Tinubu, dismissing the allegations of irregularities brought by the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labor Party (LP).
The court declared that Tinubu had met the constitutional requirements for his election as president, effectively legitimizing his position. Abubakar Atiku of the PDP and Peter Obi of the LP, who secured the second and third positions in the election, had contested the results announced by the election body. Despite the earlier ruling of the election tribunal on September 6, both Atiku and Obi had vowed to seek further redress in court.
President Tinubu accepted the Supreme Court’s ruling with a strong commitment to addressing the challenges facing Nigerians and uniting citizens of diverse political affiliations, tribes, and faiths.
