The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Manipur government to pay compensation to the next of kin in pending cases of those who lost their lives within four weeks. Additionally, compensation for the reconstruction of houses must be paid within six weeks, according to NHRC Chairperson Justice Arun Kumar Mishra (retd).
The directive comes after the NHRC’s two-day ‘camp sitting’ in Guwahati, where issues related to highway blockades and a roadmap for restoring normalcy in Manipur were discussed. Mishra also expressed concern over the ethnic conflict in Manipur, emphasizing the need to address social and political tensions in the region. The NHRC has registered 18 cases related to human rights violations in connection with incidents of violence in Manipur.
