NGT Seeks Action on Waste Dumping in Vandalur Reserve Forest
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Chengalpattu District Collector to investigate and report on the illegal dumping of solid waste along the Vandalur Reserve Forest boundary. This directive follows a petition by local resident Balaji Thangavel, highlighting the 1.2-km stretch from Perungalathur where residents dispose of household waste due to inadequate waste bins.
The District Forest Officer noted the area’s ecological significance as a corridor for spotted deer, emphasizing the need for protective measures. The DFO recommended the allocation of a proper waste segregation site and the construction of a compound wall after the completion of the Eastern Bypass to mitigate human impact on the forest.
