NGT Orders Reports on Garbage Removal from Kosasthalaiyar River near Puzhal

The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has requested several authorities, including the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and the Naravarikuppam town panchayat, to provide reports on the removal of garbage from the Kosasthalaiyar River near Puzhal and measures taken to prevent waste dumping. The tribunal initiated this action following a news report that highlighted how a portion of the Kosasthalaiyar River in Puzhal had become a dumping ground for waste from neighboring town panchayats in Tiruvallur district.

According to the report, the Naravarikuppam panchayat had deposited waste on the riverbanks near the Puzhal reservoir outlet, creating an approximately 250-meter stretch that emitted a foul odor. The Bench had previously issued notices to various authorities involved. On October 10, the Bench noted that the TNPCB had not yet submitted a report and directed all the authorities to provide their responses, requesting information on whether the dumped waste had been removed and what measures had been taken to prevent future waste dumping.
