MRTS Train Services to be Temporarily Truncated at Chintadripet for Fourth-Line Construction
Starting August 27, the Southern Railway will truncate the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) train services between Chennai Beach and Velachery at Chintadripet railway station to facilitate the construction of a fourth line between Beach and Egmore stations.
According to Chennai Divisional Railway Manager B. Viswanath Eerya, the decision was made to terminate the services at Chintadripet based on the availability of space for passenger movement and the convenience of shuttle services, as suggested by Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) officials.
This move will involve the cessation of MRTS trains operating from Beach to Gummidipoondi, Avadi, Pattabhiram, Tiruvallur, and Arakkonam. The Southern Railway has prepared a new timetable for 80 trains that will operate between Chintadripet and Velachery, with a frequency of every 25 minutes during peak hours and half an hour during off-peak hours.
The construction of the fourth line, a long-pending project between Chennai Beach and Egmore, aims to decongest train operations and improve connectivity.
