Mounting Protest Against Granite Quarry in Disaster-Prone Region of Wayanad
Protests are escalating against the proposal to establish a granite quarry in Valathur, an ecologically sensitive area on the Wayanad-Malappuram border, as local residents and activists raise concerns over potential environmental hazards. Despite previous opposition and a directive from the Wayanad District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to cancel permission due to the site’s identification as a disaster-prone area, the lobby behind the quarry has obtained a stay order from the Kerala High Court.
Preliminary works have resumed, sparking fears among residents about the adverse impact on wildlife, human settlements, and the delicate ecosystem of the region, including its significance as a water source. Residents vow to intensify their protests if the project proceeds, emphasizing the need to protect their environment and livelihoods from further degradation.
