The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to establish compressed biogas plants in several zones of the city by February 2024. Already operational in Chetpet and Madhavaram, these plants are capable of generating 6 tonnes of compressed biogas daily. The expansion aims to utilize over 30% of the city’s municipal solid waste for biogas production.
Meetings with oil marketing companies have been conducted to promote marketing tie-ups with private concessionaires in partnership with the public sector. The new facilities will process waste in Sholinganallur and Koyambedu with a combined capacity of 200 tonnes and another in Manali with a capacity of 500 tonnes, further contributing to sustainable waste management in the city.
