Milestone in Chennai Metro Rail: Launch of 30-Meter ‘U Girder’ for Phase II Project

Chennai Metro Rail achieved a significant milestone in its Phase II project with the launch of a 30-meter-long ‘U girder’ using an advanced puller axle system. The event took place at a construction site in the IT corridor, as part of the ongoing development of corridor 3–Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Sholinganallur. The elevated stretch between Taramani and SIPCOT, a crucial segment of the project, has been under construction for several months.

The ‘U girder,’ a precast structure used for viaduct construction, marks the longest span launched in this corridor. The puller axle system, featuring a specially fabricated trailer with 12 axles and 96 tires, facilitated the transportation and erection of the girder at a height of 20 meters between Okkiyampet and Karapakkam in OMR. This achievement is hailed as a historic milestone in India’s metro construction landscape, showcasing the expertise of the Chennai Metro Rail and Larson & Toubro project team.
