Milestone for Chennai Metro: ‘Kaveri’ TBM Crosses Adyar Riverbed

A significant milestone has been achieved by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) as the ‘Kaveri’ tunnel boring machine (TBM) successfully crossed beneath the Adyar riverbed. This advancement marks a crucial step towards the completion of corridor 3 of the Phase II Project, facilitating smoother commuting between Adyar and various parts of the city via Metro Rail in the future. Notably, ‘Kaveri’ becomes the first TBM to tunnel beneath a river in CMRL’s Phase II Project, underscoring the project’s innovative engineering feats.

Despite encountering challenging soil conditions, including sandy and clayey compositions, the TBM persevered, drilling through the riverbed with precision. As the TBM progresses towards the site of the Adyar Junction Metro station, CMRL remains on track to deliver enhanced connectivity and convenience to Chennai residents through its ambitious metro expansion plans.
