MHA Urges States to End Discrimination in Prisons
The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a directive to all States and Union Territories, urging them to eliminate caste and religion-based discrimination in prisons. Highlighting the constitutional prohibition of discrimination on such grounds, the MHA emphasized adherence to the Model Prison Manual, 2016, which explicitly prohibits caste and religion-based segregation or special treatment of prisoners.
The directive underscores the importance of ensuring equitable assignment of duties and work among prisoners, irrespective of their socio-economic status or background. Additionally, the MHA emphasized the significance of prioritizing the medical care of prisoners, stressing the need for regular health check-ups and screenings for infectious diseases, with special attention to women and transgender prisoners.
The directive aims to uphold the principles of equality and human rights within the prison system, promoting fair treatment and well-being for all inmates.
