Metrowater Takes Action Against Encroachments on Conduit Lines to Kilpauk Treatment Plant

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Metrowater, has initiated the clearance of encroachments along British-era conduit lines that transport water from the Red Hills reservoir to the Kilpauk water treatment plant. Identifying nearly 1,300 encroachments along the 10 km-12 km stretch, Metrowater utilized DGPS and drone surveys to assess changes in land use.

The three conduit lines, dating back to 1914, are at risk of encroachments despite running underground. The lands they traverse, covering approximately 165 acres, are susceptible to encroachment due to urbanization.

Metrowater, aiming to protect these lands vital for water distribution, is demarcating boundaries and systematically clearing encroachments. This proactive measure addresses the growing drinking water demands of Chennai and ensures the integrity of the city’s water distribution network.
