Medavakkam Panchayat Struggles with Unsegregated Waste Management

Medavakkam, an area near Information Technology companies, has been grappling with the challenge of solid waste management, given its rapid expansion over the past decade. The panchayat officials are facing significant difficulties in handling the mounting problem of unsegregated waste. Approximately one lakh houses’ garbage is being dumped daily behind the Pallikaranai police station, presenting a concerning situation.

Despite Google Maps identifying the site as a pond, it is now occupied by mounds of unsegregated garbage. Residents lament the lack of proper segregation practices, citing a shortage of workers within the panchayat to handle the task. According to records, the land in question is classified as “forest.” A micro composting facility established by the panchayat remains underutilized, further exacerbating the waste management issue.
