Mayor’s Initiative to Enhance Flood Preparedness in Chennai

Chennai Mayor R. Priya has initiated meetings with residents near canals to address civic issues and enhance flood preparedness. In discussions at Ambattur lake surplus course and Otteri Nullah, she instructed officials to explore constructing new canals for better drainage. Residents have requested new drainage systems, particularly near Anna Nagar Tower Park, to mitigate flooding.

While some proposals are feasible, others require careful study to avoid increasing flood risks in different areas. Additionally, efforts are underway to divert floodwater from Ambattur lake to Korattur lake and the Cooum River to reduce inundation during the northeast monsoon.
