A landmark report from the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of People with Disability has highlighted the need for significant reforms in Australia to create an inclusive society for individuals with disabilities. After a four-and-a-half-year inquiry, the commissioners found that people with disabilities continue to face high levels of violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
The report, which consists of 12 volumes and includes 222 recommendations for change, calls for the establishment of a Disability Rights Act in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It also advocates for the phasing out of segregated employment by 2034 and the end of segregated education by 2051. The report emphasizes that achieving social transformation and true inclusion requires addressing the historical exclusion of people with disabilities.
