Madras High Court Cancels Acquittal of TN Minister Duraimurugan in Disproportionate Assets Case
The Madras High Court has cancelled the acquittal of Tamil Nadu Minister Duraimurugan in a case related to disproportionate assets. The court examined the earlier judgment and found issues with the way the lower court handled the case. The High Court has now ordered a fresh trial.
Duraimurugan, who currently serves as the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister, faced charges for owning more wealth than his known sources of income could justify. The case dates back to when he held office in earlier government terms. The investigation started after officials received complaints and checked his financial records.
Earlier, a special court in Chennai cleared him of all charges. That court said the prosecution had not given enough evidence. But now, the Madras High Court has disagreed. The judges reviewed the evidence and ruled that the lower court did not fully examine key documents and witness statements.
The High Court judges said, “The trial court made an error by not properly analyzing all the facts. It ignored important details in the case.” They added that the public must trust the justice system, especially when the case involves a public servant.
The High Court has now ordered the trial to begin again. It asked the trial court to take a fresh look at all the evidence and decide the case fairly. The judges also said that the case must move quickly without unnecessary delays.
Duraimurugan has not yet responded publicly to the court’s decision. His legal team is expected to review the new order and decide on the next steps.
This decision by the Madras High Court is a major development in Tamil Nadu politics. It shows that the court is serious about holding public officials accountable. Legal experts say this could lead to more careful investigations and trials in similar cases in the future.
As the new trial begins, all eyes will be on how the case unfolds and whether the court finds Duraimurugan guilty or innocent this time.
