The Water Resources Department’s initiative to commence repair work on the Link Canal, a pivotal conduit between Poondi and Chembarambakkam reservoirs, marks a significant step in enhancing Chennai’s water distribution system. With sections of the canal in need of refurbishment after nearly two decades, the project aims to address vulnerabilities, optimize water flow, and minimize evaporation and seepage losses.
Scheduled for a 10km stretch initially, the ₹12-crore endeavor underscores the department’s commitment to bolstering water infrastructure resilience. Despite the anticipated six-month timeline, interruptions will occur during water flow periods, ensuring minimal disruption to canal functionality. Once completed, the rehabilitated Link Canal will play a crucial role in sustaining Chennai’s water supply and resilience against future challenges.
