Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) experienced a significant slowdown in the construction of its Phase II project due to a severe workforce shortage during the Lok Sabha election period. Ideally requiring 25,000 workers, CMRL managed with only 12,000-14,000 workers as many left to vote.
Although the workforce is gradually returning, the shortage impacted the pace of construction. CMRL is now exerting pressure on contractors to increase resources to meet the deadline. The first stretch from Poonamallee to Porur is still expected to open by the end of 2025.
