Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport, a long-cherished dream, is closer to becoming a reality with the arrival of the first mother ship from China. The ship, Zhen-Hua 15, carried massive cranes and received a traditional water salute upon its arrival. Departing from China in August, it initially berthed at the Mundra Port in Gujarat before reaching Vizhinjam.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister of Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal are set to officially receive the ship on Sunday. This major development marks the port’s progress towards opening the gateway to international marine transshipment, with over 80% of the first phase of construction already complete. Commercial operations are expected to begin in May next year after more ships arrive.
