Kerala High Court Upholds Death Sentence in Perumbavoor Rape and Murder Case

The Kerala High Court has upheld the death sentence of Ameerul Islam, the sole convict in the 2016 rape and murder case of a Dalit LLB student from Perumbavoor. The Division Bench affirmed the verdict of the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court, dismissing the convict’s appeal. Ameerul Islam, a migrant worker from Assam, was arrested 49 months after the heinous crime, where the law student was found raped and murdered in her house.

The sessions court had deemed the case as one of the “rarest of rare” instances, akin to the Nirbhaya case, warranting capital punishment. Additionally, Islam was sentenced to life imprisonment and rigorous imprisonment for various sections of the Indian Penal Code, marking a significant verdict in Kerala’s legal history.
