Kasimedu Fishing Harbour Modernization Receives ₹98 Crore Sanction

The long-awaited modernization of Kasimedu Fishing Harbour is set to become a reality as the Centre has granted ₹98 crore for the project, comprising 25 works with an estimated total cost of ₹127 crore. The remaining expenses will be covered by the Fishing Harbour Management Committee (FHMC). The project has been divided into six packages, with the first package expected to commence in January, and the entire endeavor slated for completion by June 2025, according to Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of the Chennai Port Trust.

The Kasimedu Fishing Harbour in north Chennai is a significant fishing hub, utilized by around 750 mechanized boats from various nearby regions. The modernization initiative includes enhancements such as additional fish landing wharves, a mechanized fish-handling complex, boat repair facilities, cold storage, and upgrades to essential amenities, further positioning the harbor to meet international standards.

Fishermen and stakeholders anticipate that this transformation will significantly benefit the local fishing community, improve fish quality, and potentially enable direct fish exports.
