Karnataka Transport Bandh Sees Strong Response Against Shakthi Scheme and More

The bandh organized by the Federation of Private Transporters in Karnataka on Monday, primarily in protest against the Shakthi scheme offering free travel for women, received substantial support across the state, particularly in Bengaluru. Over 30 private transport organizations and farmers’ associations endorsed the bandh, leading to private buses, taxis, autos, and goods vehicles staying off the roads, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Numerous schools remained closed due to the protests, impacting parents and children. Office-goers and the public relying on taxis and autos for daily commutes had to seek alternative transportation, with some resorting to walking or utilizing government buses. Passengers heading to Bengaluru International Airport were especially affected, as taxi services were disrupted, and incidents of violence against drivers were reported.

The private transport sector claims to have suffered financially since the implementation of the free travel scheme and has voiced various demands, including financial aid for drivers and a ban on bike taxis.
