Karnataka Chief Minister Announces Review Petition Against Cauvery Water Release

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that a review petition will be filed before the Cauvery Water Management Authority and the Supreme Court, asserting that the state lacks sufficient water resources to release water to neighboring Tamil Nadu. After a meeting with retired Supreme Court judges and former Advocate Generals of the state, Siddaramaiah commended the public and organizations for maintaining a peaceful bandh and applauded the officers for maintaining law and order.

He stated that the meeting participants provided opinions and suggestions, including the formation of an expert advisory committee to advise the government on irrigation projects and inter-state water disputes. Regarding the release of 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, it was argued that Karnataka cannot comply due to water scarcity.

Siddaramaiah also emphasized the state’s demand for the Mekedatu scheme and its potential benefits for both states. He noted that a special legislative session would be convened if necessary and clarified that contempt of court would only apply if the order is intentionally disobeyed.
