Karnataka Chief Minister Advocates Against Rising Caste Consciousness

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has voiced concern over the growing caste consciousness and superstitious beliefs among educated individuals in the state. Speaking at an event honoring meritorious students in Bengaluru, he underscored the responsibility of parents and teachers in preventing children from succumbing to divisive mindsets and superstitions. Siddaramaiah lamented that despite the efforts of historical reformers like Buddha and Basavanna to eradicate the caste system, its resurgence among educated circles remains troubling.

Emphasizing the need for societal equality, he urged for a departure from discriminatory teachings and the embrace of scientific temper to foster a more enlightened future generation. Citing poet Kuvempu’s metaphor of children born as ‘universal men’ but often becoming ‘petty men’ due to societal influences, Siddaramaiah highlighted the imperative role of education and empowerment, echoing the principles advocated by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
