Karnataka Budget Paves the Way for BBMP Revenue Surge and Traffic Decongestion

The recently unveiled Karnataka budget for 2024-25 aims to bolster the revenue of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) significantly while prioritizing initiatives to alleviate Bengaluru’s traffic congestion. Despite not allocating funds for these projects, the budget underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing BBMP’s revenue generation capabilities.

With tax collection expected to soar to ₹6,000 crore in the upcoming fiscal year, the government aims to address the city’s traffic woes through ambitious undertakings such as the construction of a tunnel road. This initiative is set to commence with a trial tunnel at Hebbal junction to assess feasibility. Additionally, plans to kickstart the Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC), formerly known as the Peripheral Ring Road, underscore the government’s determination to tackle traffic congestion.

Other proposals include the development of a 100 km all-weather road within the canal buffer zone and significant investments in white-topping roads in the Central Business District (CBD). Furthermore, the government plans to address traffic congestion comprehensively through initiatives like Sugama Sanchara – Brand Bengaluru, in consultation with expert committees.
