Karnataka BJP Unit to Deliberate on Cauvery Water Release

The Karnataka unit of the BJP is set to hold a meeting on Friday to discuss the Congress government’s decision to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The meeting in Mandya City will be attended by prominent party leaders from the Cauvery basin area, including MLAs, MPs, MLCs, and defeated candidates from various districts. Independent MP from Mandya, Sumalatha Ambareesh, will also participate.

The discussion will focus on the future course of action regarding the water release and decide on opposing it. The Congress government has faced criticism for not challenging Tamil Nadu’s claims and protests against the water release have been ongoing. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the state had asked the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal to reconsider its decision due to rainfall shortages and adequate reservoir storage for drinking water needs. Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy questioned the necessity of obliging the management board’s directions when Tamil Nadu is allegedly cultivating land illegally with excess water.
