‘Kallakkadal’ Alert: Coastal Kerala and South Tamil Nadu Warned of Rough Seas

Coastal areas of Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu have been warned of the ‘kallakkadal’ phenomenon, which causes sudden swell in the seas and rough waves. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has advised fishermen to safely moor their vessels in harbours during the period from 2.30 a.m. on May 4 to 11.30 p.m. on May 5.

The rough sea conditions, with waves reaching heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters, pose a potential risk to coastal residents and fishermen. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) and other weather agencies have urged people to stay away from danger zones and avoid trips to the beach during this period to ensure safety.
