Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale Sworn In, Elevating Dalit Representation in Supreme Court to Three
Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale has been sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court, increasing Dalit representation on the Bench to three alongside Justices B.R. Gavai and C.T. Ravikumar. This appointment marks a commitment to maintain a full judicial strength to manage the increasing workload and pending cases.
The Supreme Court has operated with a complete roster of 34 judges throughout the past year, achieving a record rate of case disposal. Justice Varale’s appointment filled the lone vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul in December 2023, maintaining the sanctioned judicial strength of the court.
Justice Varale, previously the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, brings a wealth of experience to the Supreme Court, having served as a judge for 23 years with a reputation for unimpeachable conduct and integrity.
