Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta expressed firm support for the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) system, stating that attempts to undermine the nation’s achievements should be thwarted. He emphasized the need for constitutional courts to prevent any concerted effort to discredit the nation’s progress. Justice Datta dismissed calls to revert to the paper ballot system, highlighting the importance of improvements in the EVMs.
He underscored the Election Commission’s responsibility to defend the sanctity of the electoral process, especially during the General Elections. Justice Datta cautioned that challenges to the electoral process gain momentum before major elections, urging the EC to mount a robust defense. He acknowledged the monumental task of conducting elections in India, citing the country’s massive electorate and the significant expenditure involved in the electoral process.
