The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reveals a devastating toll on journalists in the Gaza Strip since Hamas initiated its assault on Israel on October 7. In its latest report, CPJ discloses that 39 journalists and media workers have lost their lives in the violence, marking October 2023 as the deadliest month for journalists globally since record-keeping began in 1992.
Of the fatalities, 34 were Palestinian, four Israeli, and one Lebanese. The report also notes eight journalists injured, three missing, and 13 arrested, with additional reports of assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings targeting journalists’ family members.
CPJ emphasizes the civilian status of journalists during crises and condemns their targeting by warring parties. The toll on Gaza journalists, facing unprecedented threats and sacrifices, highlights the urgent need for the protection of media workers in conflict zones.
