For the first time in 33 years, since separatist violence began in Jammu and Kashmir, authorities have chosen not to impose restrictions on the main Independence Day function in Srinagar city. Kashmir Divisional Commissioner, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, extended an open invitation to the general public on Monday to attend the event at Bakshi Stadium without requiring special passes. Notably, no restrictions were imposed throughout the Valley.
Attendees will need only their identity cards for entry. Contrary to previous years, there was no announcement of mobile phone or internet service suspensions. Train services between south and north Kashmir districts will operate normally on Independence Day.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha will unfurl the national flag and take the parade salute, with district development commissioners doing the same in each district. Civilians have been welcomed to these events without constraints. As large public participation is expected, aerial surveillance, drones, police, and paramilitary forces have been deployed for enhanced security.
