Jaishankar Advocates Multifaceted Engagement with Russia Amidst Changing Geopolitical Dynamics

At the Raisina Dialogue, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of engaging with Russia, a nation with a rich tradition of statecraft, amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics. He stressed the need to offer Russia multiple options instead of coercing it into a single relationship, suggesting that such an approach would only exacerbate tensions. Jaishankar underscored Russia’s increasing tilt towards Asia and non-Western parts of the world, pointing out that this shift is a response to the closing of doors by the West.

He highlighted the irony of Western policies inadvertently pushing Russia and China closer together while simultaneously cautioning against their growing proximity. Despite concerns over Russia’s ties with China, Jaishankar reiterated India’s stable and friendly relationship with Moscow, emphasizing that Russia has never acted against India’s interests.

He also highlighted India’s role in the G20, particularly its successful effort to include the African Union as a permanent member, suggesting that this achievement could pave the way for broader reforms in global institutions like the UN Security Council. Additionally, Jaishankar outlined India’s foreign policy priorities, including combating terrorism and promoting global welfare through initiatives like millets, yoga, solar energy, and tackling black money. Overall, his remarks underscored the importance of nuanced and multifaceted engagement with Russia amidst complex geopolitical shifts.
