Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh has sharply criticized attempts to find silver linings in what he describes as a “moral, political, and personal” defeat for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ramesh emphasized the discrepancy between Modi’s electoral performance and the historical context, contrasting it with the substantial mandates received by leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru.
He pointed out that while Nehru secured overwhelming majorities, Modi’s electoral success falls short of such standards. Additionally, Ramesh highlighted the multiple terms served by leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Indira Gandhi, challenging the narrative of Modi’s unique achievement. He characterized efforts to justify Modi’s performance as a desperate search for excuses amidst disappointing electoral results for the BJP in 2024.
