Intense Cold Grips Jammu and Kashmir

Intense dry cold weather has led to freezing temperatures in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar recorded a chilling minus 4 degrees Celsius, while Jammu experienced its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 3.7 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg and Pahalgam registered minus 3.2 and 5.3 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In the Ladakh region, Leh had a minimum temperature of minus 11.2 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 9.2, and Drass minus 11.5. The 40 days of harsh winter cold, known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ commenced on December 21 and is expected to last until January 30. So far, the region has witnessed a dry winter with no major snowfall, and the Meteorological Department predicts limited chances of significant snowfall until January 25.
