As part of the phase II project of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), set to open in December 2025, bus stops will be strategically located close to Metro stations, facilitating seamless connectivity for commuters. With a focus on ease of access, CMRL has been designing stations to ensure that passengers can effortlessly switch between buses, suburban trains, and the Metro.
The first stretch of the ₹61,843-crore phase II project, from Poonamallee to Porur Bypass, will see bus stops within 50 to 100 meters of Metro stations. The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is actively engaged in discussions with CMRL to finalize station designs and integrate bus stops as close as possible to ensure convenient intermodal transit.
The emphasis is on prioritizing public transport and creating a mass rapid transit system that stands the test of time, even if additional land acquisition is required for optimal placement of bus stops. The design will also include pedestrian-friendly two-meter-wide footpaths leading to the stations, enhancing the overall commuter experience.
