India’s Strategic Energy Initiative in Sri Lanka’s Northern Islands

India is poised to implement a strategic energy project in Sri Lanka’s northern islands, a move that comes after objections to a Chinese energy initiative in the region. With an $11-million grant, India’s U-Solar Clean Energy Solutions will construct Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems on Delft or Neduntheevu, Nainativu, and Analaitivu islands.

This initiative aims to address the energy needs of the local population through a combination of solar, wind, battery, and standby diesel power systems. The project signifies India’s commitment to bolstering energy infrastructure in Sri Lanka’s north and east, complementing similar ventures by the National Thermal Power Corporation and the Adani Group.

The decision to opt for an Indian firm over the previously chosen Sinosoar-Etechwin Joint Venture from China reflects strategic considerations amidst geopolitical sensitivities in the region.
