Indian-Origin Tharman Shanmugaratnam Elected President of Singapore
Singaporean economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam, of Indian origin, has been elected as the ninth president of Singapore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shanmugaratnam on his election and expressed his eagerness to work closely to strengthen the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership. Shanmugaratnam, 66, secured a landslide victory in the presidential election held on Friday.
His election marks a significant moment in Singapore’s history, and his Indian heritage has drawn attention, as he becomes one of the few Indian-origin leaders in the region.
