In a swift and decisive response, the Indian Navy once again demonstrated its commitment to maritime security by rescuing the cargo vessel MV Genco Picardy from a drone attack in the Gulf of Aden. The distress call prompted the guided missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam to intercept the vessel, carrying 22 crew members, including nine Indians.
Despite the attack, there were no reported casualties, and the fire was brought under control. Bomb experts from INS Visakhapatnam boarded the ship, inspected the damage, and declared the area safe for transit. This incident follows an earlier one on January 4, where the Indian Navy thwarted a hijacking attempt in the Arabian Sea.
With concerns rising over Houthi militants targeting merchant vessels amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar has emphasized a firm response to such maritime incidents. India’s increased maritime surveillance, deployment of 10 warships, and strategic use of Maritime Patrol Aircraft reflect a proactive stance in addressing piracy and ensuring the safety of seafaring vessels in the region.
