India Sends First Sea Shipment of Special Pomegranates to US, Says Government

India has sent its first commercial sea shipment of special pomegranates to the United States, the government said in a recent statement. This move marks a big step forward in India’s efforts to increase fruit exports and support its farmers.

The shipment came from farms in Maharashtra, a state well known for producing high-quality pomegranates. Exporters carefully sorted, packed, and loaded the fruits onto a cargo ship. The ship carried the fruits across the ocean and delivered them safely to the US.

Until now, India only exported pomegranates to the US by air. Air transport cost more and allowed smaller shipments. By using sea routes, exporters can now send larger quantities at a lower cost. This change helps farmers earn more money and gives US customers easier access to India’s fresh and tasty fruits.

The Indian government worked with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to make sure the shipment met all quality and safety standards. Officials inspected the pomegranates, checked for pests, and ensured the fruits stayed fresh during the long journey.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) played a major role in this success. APEDA trained farmers and exporters in modern farming, better packing methods, and cold chain management. These steps helped protect the fruit and keep it fresh during shipping.

The government believes this shipment will open the door for more Indian fruits to reach the US market. Officials also said that this success proves Indian farmers and exporters can meet international standards and compete globally.

This sea shipment will not only improve India’s trade with the US but also help increase the income of Indian farmers. The government plans to support more such efforts in the future and encourage more agricultural exports.

With this step, India has created new opportunities for its farmers and built stronger trade ties with the US.
