India Ready to Investigate Alleged Links to US Plot, Says PM Modi
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the Indian government is open to investigating any information it receives regarding alleged links to a foiled plot to murder a Sikh separatist in the United States. The issue has emerged at a sensitive time for India and the Biden administration as they aim to strengthen ties amid shared concerns about China. Last month, the US Justice Department accused an Indian government official of directing the plot, leading to concerns and dissociation by the Indian government.
PM Modi assured that if someone provides information, India would thoroughly examine it, emphasizing the country’s commitment to the rule of law. Despite these developments, he downplayed the impact on diplomatic relations with the United States, citing the mature and stable partnership between the two nations.
The US plot involves allegations of targeting Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist associated with Sikhs for Justice, labeled an “unlawful association” by India in 2019. The situation comes after Canada’s previous claims linking Indian agents to the murder of another Sikh separatist in June. PM Modi emphasized that linking a few incidents should not affect diplomatic relations.
